Bill Bleyer Presents: "Sagamore Hill: Theodore Roosevelt's Summer White House"

An illustrated lecture by Bill Bleyer, tracing the Roosevelt family's first summers at Oyster Bay during the Civil War through the building of Sagamore Hill, the house Theodore Roosevelt designed as his ideal home. There he entertained political allies such as Henry Cabot Lodge alongside cultural figures including the novelist Edith Wharton. Roosevelt spent his last years contentedly at Sagamore Hill, and following his death in 1919 the property was safeguarded by his widow, later the Theodore Roosevelt Association, and ultimately the National Park Service.
