Inside the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library That Doesn't Want to Be a Library

The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library opens July 4, 2026 — America's 250th birthday — in Medora, North Dakota (population: 130). Designed by Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, the 93-acre campus features a living roof planted with 140,000 native plants, immersive AI-powered exhibits, and a building pursuing the Living Building Challenge — one of the most rigorous green certifications on Earth. Fewer than 40 buildings have ever achieved it.

We toured the library before it opened and spoke with CEO Ed O'Keefe, Director of Facilities and Sustainability Jenn Carroll, and the superintendent of the adjacent Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

They say the library isn't just about Teddy Roosevelt — it's designed to challenge visitors to become better citizens, conservationists and leaders.
