Walking the Badlands Without Leaving the Trail — The TR Library Boardwalk

Theodore Roosevelt came to the Badlands and found something that changed him. The Boardwalk at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library is built so anyone can go looking for the same thing.

The design is simple on purpose. The nearly one-mile loop stays level the whole way, so a visitor using a wheelchair, a grandparent, and a kid at a dead sprint all get the same experience — the same overlooks, the same trail, the same Badlands. In one stretch you're up at prairie-dog height, peeking over the landscape. In another, the ground drops away far below.

This isn't a walk around a building. It's the point of the place. Roosevelt wouldn't have wanted anyone to spend the day inside a box, and the Boardwalk is the Library's way of saying so out loud: the real classroom is outside.
