Weekend Drives to Medora

Medora is closer than most people think. If you live in the northern plains, the Badlands and the Presidential Library are a long weekend, not an expedition.

Four routes below, shortest to longest, with what to do when you get here. All of them work as a Friday-evening departure and a Sunday-afternoon return.

Book lodging early for summer weekends — Medora is a small town and it fills.

From Bismarck — 2 hours

135 miles west on I-94. The easiest one. You can leave after work and be at dinner in Medora.

  • Stop at Painted Canyon Overlook at Exit 32 on the way in — it is right off the interstate.
  • Two full days is enough for the Library, the South Unit loop and an evening in town.
  • With a third day, add the Elkhorn Ranch site or the park’s North Unit, about 90 minutes north.

From Fargo — 4.5 hours

330 miles straight west on I-94. One tank, one road, no navigation required.

  • Break the drive in Bismarck at the halfway point — the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum is free and directly on the route.
  • Arrive Friday evening, get two clear days in the Badlands, drive home Sunday.
  • In summer, book the Medora Musical and the Pitchfork Steak Fondue before you leave.

From Minneapolis — 8 hours

558 miles on I-94. A long day, but a single interstate the whole way.

  • Most people split it. Fargo at 3.5 hours and Bismarck at 6 both make sensible overnight stops.
  • Leave Friday morning and you are in Medora for dinner. Leave Friday evening and stop in Fargo.
  • Give yourself three days here if you have driven this far — the Library, the South Unit, and either the North Unit or the Elkhorn.

Time zone note: Medora is on Mountain Time. You gain an hour driving west and lose it coming home.

From Winnipeg — 8 hours

487 miles south. Down through the Pembina crossing and across North Dakota.

  • You will cross an international border. Bring passports for everyone in the vehicle and check current requirements before you travel.
  • Grand Forks or Bismarck both work as an overnight if you would rather not do it in one push.
  • Prices in Medora are in US dollars; most places take Canadian credit cards without trouble.

Calgary is about 11 hours (715 miles) — long for a weekend, but a good four-day trip, and the route passes close to Waterton and Glacier.
