Winnipeg to Medora: A Long Weekend

487 miles · about 8 hours · south through the Pembina crossing, then west

Medora is closer to Winnipeg than a lot of Manitobans expect — roughly the same drive as Thunder Bay, and pointed at scenery you cannot get anywhere on the prairies at home.

Everyone in the vehicle needs a passport or approved travel document. Check current entry requirements and border wait times before you leave; the Emerson–Pembina crossing is open 24 hours but times vary.

Medora is on Mountain Time — two hours behind Winnipeg. You gain them driving out and lose them coming home.

The route, and where to break it

The straightforward way is south on Highway 75 to the Emerson–Pembina crossing, down I-29 to Fargo, then west on I-94. Longer on the map than the diagonal, but it is interstate nearly the whole way.

  • Grand Forks, ND — about 2.5 hours in, the first sensible stop south of the border.
  • Fargo — about 4 hours, and the natural overnight if you would rather not do it in one push. Turn west here.
  • Jamestown — the National Buffalo Museum and the World’s Largest Buffalo, a 26-foot concrete bison with a live herd below it.
  • Bismarck — the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum, free and directly on I-94.
  • The Enchanted Highway at Exit 72, and Painted Canyon at Exit 32.

A note on money: prices are in US dollars. Most places in Medora take Canadian credit cards without trouble, but check your card’s foreign transaction fees.

Day one: the Library and the South Unit

  • The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. Two to three hours in the galleries, the Boardwalk out over the bluff, lunch at the Library Café.
  • The South Unit scenic loop — 36 miles, about 1.5 hours with stops. Bison, prairie dog towns and wild horses; stop at Wind Canyon above the Little Missouri.
  • The Maltese Cross Cabin at the park visitor center — Roosevelt’s first ranch house, and you can walk through it.
  • Evening: the Medora Musical and the Pitchfork Steak Fondue in summer, both booked ahead.

Day two: the North Unit

If you have driven eight hours, take the extra day. The North Unit is about 90 minutes north of Medora and gets a fraction of the traffic — deeper canyons, longer views, and the road ends at the Oxbow Overlook above a bend in the Little Missouri.

  • Watch for the longhorn steers the park keeps near the entrance, and the cannonball concretions along the drive — spherical rock formations you will not see in the South Unit.
  • Bighorn sheep and bison are both common.
  • Alternatively, the Elkhorn Ranch site: the ground where Roosevelt built his home ranch, with nothing left standing. Gravel roads and no services — check conditions with the park first.

Head north Sunday. Build in extra time at the border on holiday weekends.
