Give Stocks and Securities

A gift of appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds is one of the most tax-efficient ways to invest in the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and in the legacy of conservation, leadership, and citizenship the Library carries forward.

Why Give Securities to TRPLF?

A gift of long-term appreciated securities offers two distinct tax advantages that aren't available with a cash gift of the same value.

  • Avoid capital gains tax. When you donate securities you've held for more than one year, you bypass the capital gains tax you would owe if you sold them yourself.
  • Receive a full fair-market-value deduction. You can deduct the current market value of the securities - not just what you originally paid for them.

How It Works

The most common and efficient way to give securities is by electronic transfer between brokerage accounts.

  1. Notify us in advance. Use our Stock Transfer Notification Form to let us know what you're transferring and when. Without notification, securities can arrive in our account without donor identification, which delays acknowledgment.
  2. Instruct your broker to make the transfer. Provide your broker with our transfer instructions (below).
  3. We acknowledge your gift. TRPLF sends a written acknowledgement confirming the date of transfer and number of shares received. Your tax deduction is based on the average of the high and low trading prices on the date of the transfer.
